The Kurds are thought to number from 25 million to 30 million, including communities in Armenia, Georgia , Kazakhstan , Lebanon , Syria, and Europe, but sources for this information differ widely because of differing criteria of ethnicity , religion, and language; statistics may also be manipulated for political purposes. The traditional Kurdish way of life was nomadic , revolving around sheep and goat herding throughout the Mesopotamian plains and the highlands of Turkey and Iran. Most Kurds practiced only marginal agriculture. The enforcement of national boundaries beginning after World War I —18 impeded the seasonal migrations of the flocks, forcing most of the Kurds to abandon their traditional ways for village life and settled farming; others entered nontraditional employment. The prehistory of the Kurds is poorly known, but their ancestors seem to have inhabited the same upland region for millennia. Most Kurds are Sunni Muslims, and among them are many who practice Sufism and other mystical sects.

Cultural Mediator (Arabic & Kurdish)

As a Kurdish girl, I am always fighting a battle between traditionalism and modernism, as if these two ideologies are dichotomies on opposite sides of a cultural spectrum. I am here to contest this illusion that we as a society have bestowed on ourselves. This terminology is often thrown at us and I feel trapped, as if we have to choose only one side of the spectrum and remain there. Kurdish girls constantly face the stereotype that educated women are too modern and have lost their traditional ways.

Recipient of the Aga Khan Award for Architecture in Part of a range of measures aimed at development of an appropriate interface between the city of Tehran and its natural environs to the north, the Bagh-e-Ferdowsi park demonstrates an innovative approach to both conception and environmental design. The project, together with the adjoining Bagh-e-Sangi Jamshidieh park, which was designed by the same team, is part of a scheme aimed at creating a green interface between urban development and nature, at the base of the Alborz mountains, which now form the northern limits of the city.

As well as promoting conservation and awareness of nature, the project serves as an important social focus for young people from the rapidly-developing northern suburbs, while providing them with much-needed space for recreation within the parks, and on the slopes above. Inspired use of the natural topography and features of the steep site, together with intensive planting, has resulted in a design that is in harmony with nature and its surroundings.

As such, Bagh-e-Ferdowsi represents a creative re-interpretation of the traditional Persian “paradise” garden, adapted to modern needs. Bagh-e-Ferdowsi occupies some 30 hectares in the steep Darabad valley in the foothills of the Alborz mountains. The parts of the site that were in private ownership were purchased by Tehran Municipality for its transformation into a park. Apart from the intensive planting that has been introduced, the primary development on the site is a series of stone-paved paths and steps, rising up the slope of the hill, along which areas for sitting, refreshments and entertainment have been created, within the natural topography.

The Kurds, a group of approximately 18 million people, are the fourth largest ethnic group in the Middle East. Nowhere is their future more threatened than in Turkey where Kurds are one quarter of the population. Since World War I, Kurds in Turkey have been the victims of persistent assaults on their ethnic, cultural, religious identity and economic and political status by successive Turkish governments. And while the Treaty of Sevres provided for an independent Kurdistan, it was never ratified.

In the treaty of Lausanne created the modern states of Turkey, Iraq, and Syria, but Kurdistan was ignored. During Turkey’s war for independence, Turkish leaders, promised Kurds a Turkish-Kurdish federated state in return for their assistance in the war. After independence was achieved, however, they ignored the bargain they had made. Months after the declaration of a Turkish republic, Ankara, under the pretext of creating an “indivisible nation,” adopted an ideology aimed at eliminating, both physically and culturally, non-Turkish elements within the Republic.

Meet Kurdish Girls

This study brings to the fore reflections on the power relations that cross the struggle carried out by these women, who, for their part, are crossed by the intersection of gender, ethnicity and class, which feeds and composes the critical praxis of this organised struggle. The presence of the female figure in a political context of armed conflict endows these women with the role of challenging the boundaries on which the foundational elements of international politics rely, namely, the boundary between public and private spheres and gender roles played socially and politically.

Many magazine and newspaper articles that address the struggle waged by Kurdish women taking up arms to fight the terrorist group Daesh, in the Democratic Federation of Northern Syria DFNS , are marked by power relations underlying gender differences. Moreover, the challenges imposed when their female bodies are in these places of confrontation are deliberately left behind. This kind of media coverage 1 brings out the astonishment common to a certain negotiation with the East Said , as long as it is the women from this part of the world who dare to engage in such a masculine activity, namely, militarism.
